Make Time to Play

Published by kferrell under Blogging, Children, Writing Edit This

There are days that I take off from writing that are one-on-two playdates with my daughters. We will go out to the backyard or the local park, and play with all the toys. We dig in the sand, and explore all the tiny bugs. We run, jump, and burn off a lot of excess energy. I love those days, as much as they exhaust me.

Children know when they need to rest, and when they need to play. They eat until they are full, and then stop. Well, unless it’s chocolate. Kids are very in tune with their needs.

As we grow up, we lose that inner knowledge. We become wrapped up in the hustle of daily life. We work all day and then return to a house that needs cleaned and bills to pay. Some days, my to-do list is so long, I imagine that if I did everything on it, I would be busy for a week straight, without sleep! I really doubt that is even an exaggeration.

Now that I’ve made the switch to freelance writing and blogging, it is even harder for me to step away from my work. I’m running a business of one, and have all the responsibilities of freelancing to attend to. I’m also always learning, trying new things, tweaking my blogs, and spreading my social media influence.

The almost ironic thing about it is that now that I love my job, I make even less time for myself. Most meals are eaten at my desk. Breaks are few and far between. I do stop and play with my children on a regular basis, but occasionally I get so wrapped up in my work that I need a gentle tug on my shirt.

I love my work, I love my children, and I love that I can work while being with my children every day. So many people aren’t that lucky. It just takes a moment to set aside my work, and hold onto my treasures. They are my inspiration, and my muse.
